Textar-sponsored Newell completes wet truck racing finale

Date: Thursday 17 November 2022

Textar-sponsored John Newell battled challenging conditions at the final round of the British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) at Brands Hatch, to finish a commendable fourth overall in the 2022 standings.

A fourth place and a third-place finish in Saturday’s two opening races of the weekend saw Textar brand ambassador and truck racing driver, Newell, remain mathematically in contention for the championship title, albeit with his target now more realistically focused on second place.

The heavens opened on Sunday morning to welcome drivers back to the Brands Hatch circuit in saturated conditions. Sunday’s first race saw Newell suffer a retirement after contact with another truck forced him off the track, but he bounced back in the second race of the day to take second place early on, which he held on to until the chequered flag.

In the final race of the day, Newell had to go all out in a bid to clinch second in the championship but slid wide whilst challenging for position, and in the wet conditions his MAN truck spun and put him to the back of the field.

John Newell said:

“Our season’s been pretty good, and if we’d have started with the form that we finished in, we’d have been right up in the championship fight. It was great to get back in race four to second place and hold position and leave Brands Hatch with a podium.
“The weather we’ve had this weekend has brought its own challenges, so we’ve all had to adapt – it’s a real leveller driving in the wet and really adds to the spectacle.”

TMD Friction UK welcomed its Textar commercial vehicle customers to Brands Hatch for the truck racing season finale, where they were able to visit the Newell and Wright Motorsport paddock area, attend question and answer sessions with John Newell and get up close to his racing truck, plus use Textar’s hospitality suites to spectate the thrilling on-track action.

Ryan Smith took his seventh BTRC title, winning the championship on 435 points, with David Jenkins second on 369. Stuart Oliver was third, just one point behind Jenkins on 368, with Textar-sponsored John Newell fourth on 353.

By fitting Textar braking products, the Newell & Wright Motorsport race truck has the perfect combination of superior braking performance, long service life and low disc wear.
