Lambert and Lindgren on the podium in Croatia

Date: Friday 05 May 2023

The NGK-sponsored quartet of Speedway stars got off to a great start in the 2023 FIM World Championship with all four making the semi-final stage at the first Grand Prix of the season and two making the winners’ podium.

Britain’s Robert Lambert took second place in the final of the Tehnix FIM Speedway GP of Croatia in Donji Kraljevec finishing behind Poland’s triple world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik and one place in front of stablemate Freddie Lindgren who came third ahead of Australia’s Jason Doyle.

The second semi-final in Croatia saw three NGK riders compete against each other with Sweden’s Lindgren finishing second to Zmarzlik but ahead of Britons three-time World champion Tai Woffinden and current British champion and 2022 British Grand Prix winner Dan Bewley.

Runner-up Lambert said:

“In the final, I didn’t really make the best of starts. There was a bit of carnage on the first corner with Doyley going wide. A lot of guys didn’t know where to go and I was waiting for a red light that didn’t come. I made a move and managed to hold off Freddie, even though he was buzzing behind me.”

Lambert is still chasing his first Speedway GP win. After two second places, he believes he is edging ever closer. He said:

“I am working hard to take this next step. For sure it will come in the future. There are a few more steps to come and I want to enjoy the moment of racing in this series.”

Lindgren said he took advantage of a mistake by Woffinden in semi-final two to snatch second place and reach the final.

He said:

“Luckily for me, Woffy came in a bit hot in turn three. I rode a really tight corner, rode where no-one else had ridden, got some grip and passed him, so I did right there.”

John Money, who handles Speedway sponsorship on behalf of NGK-brand owner Niterra UK Ltd, said:

“It was a fantastic start to the season by our four riders and I’m sure it will be the first of many appearances by them on the podium this season.”

The championship now heads to Warsaw, Poland for the second Grand Prix on May 13.
