From sick notes to fit notes

From April 2022, a new form of sick note was introduced entitled the statement of fitness for work or “fit note”.
Unlike the previous sick notes, fit notes do not require a doctor’s signature in wet ink and the box for the signature has been removed.
Fit notes may be delivered via digital channels. However, the old sick note forms will remain in use in parallel with the new type.
From July 2022, the type of medical practitioners who can issue sick/fit notes will be widened. In addition to doctors, the following registered practitioners will be able to issue sick/fit notes:
- nurses
- occupational therapists
- physiotherapists
- pharmacists
It will remain the case that both sick/fit notes can only be issued after the initial seven days of illness. The employees will continue to self-certify for the first seven days.
