Aftermarket rallies round MOT petition

Date: Thursday 23 February 2023

IAAF members have been actively pushing for signatures of a petition that calls on the government not to extend the date of a vehicle’s first MOT to 4 years.

With more than 300,000 vehicles failing their first MOT, this would mean an increase in unsafe vehicles on UK roads.

IAAF, along with other federations, is campaigning hard to safeguard the MOT test frequency and is arguing that the future vehicle parc, comprising predominantly alternative fuelled vehicles, such as electric, may be more likely to fail the first MOT test, underlining the importance of the current test regime. On tyres, electric vehicle first test failure rates are higher than Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles and comparable with ICE on suspension.

Mark Field, IAAF Chief Executive, said:

“The Government’s plan to extend the first MOT test to save motorists money is in stark contradiction to the data that shows that motorists face worsening problems and possibly higher repair bills if vehicles remain unchecked for longer periods. More importantly, the data indicates that we could see an increase in unsafe vehicles driven on UK roads, which could result in more accidents and fatalities.”
