Young Speedway stars shine in Poland

Date: Thursday 30 June 2022

England’s Dan Bewley and Robert Lambert were the pick of the NGK-sponsored riders at the 3W FIM Speedway GP of Poland.

They both made the semi-finals of the meeting in Gorzow finishing third in their respective races to narrowly miss out on a place in the final which was won by Anders Thomsen.

The Dane topped the podium at the Edward Jancarz Stadium, heading a Stal Gorzow one-two-three with PGE Ekstraliga teammates Martin Vaculik and Bartosz Zmarzlik in front of a 14,000-strong crowd.

Bewley scored twelve points and Lambert eleven, however it was a disappointing night for NGK stablemates Tai Woffinden and Freddie Lindgren. Three-time World Champion Woffinden scored seven points and Sweden’s Lindgren five.

Lindgren has revealed he is taking a break from racing as he continues to battle the effects of long COVID.

He said:

“After consultations with a doctor, we have decided to put our racing season on a pause for the next couple of weeks. Last year ended for me prematurely after battling with long COVID and its symptoms.
“Over the past couple of weeks these symptoms of dyspnoea (breathing difficulties) have occurred again. Hopefully by putting the brakes on and taking some time off racing, I will be able to recover, start racing again and finish the 2022 season.”

John Money, who handles Speedway sponsorship on behalf of NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said:

“Dan and Robert are in terrific form and continue to add to their growing reputations in the sport. I am sure they will both soon be on the podium. However, it was a difficult meeting for Tai and Freddie who is now taking a well-deserved rest as he struggles to fight the effects of long COVID.”

Zmarzlik leads the World championship on 78 points with Lindgren in fifth place on 51 points, one point and one place ahead of Woffinden, with Lambert on 47 points and Bewley 44.

The Speedway GP series resumes with the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff on Saturday, August 13 as the Principality Stadium hosts its twentieth SGP event, which will be shown live on Discovery+ and Eurosport 2, with the FIM SGP2 of Great Britain for the sport’s under-21 stars taking place the following day.
