WAI joins industry condemnation of proposed MOT extension

Date: Thursday 19 May 2022

Leading rotating electrics supplier WAIglobal UK has joined the calls of the automotive aftermarket in condemning the proposed extension to the MOT.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps proposed relaxing the frequency of the annual MOT test in order to counter the cost-of-living crisis. However, the savings gained do not counter the increased risk to driver safety caused by dangerous vehicles, says WAI managing director Richard Welland.

“The annual MOT is a critical measure to ensure vehicles over three years of age remain roadworthy and ultimately safe for drivers,” Welland said.
“The proposal to move the MOT frequency to a biennial test is not only a dangerous idea that will see thousands more unroadworthy vehicles on the road, but also risks the future of many garages and businesses in the automotive repair sector.
“Moving the MOT test to every other year will only save drivers 50 pence. It is by no means a suitable nor appropriate measure to combat the current cost-of-living crisis and instead severely risks road safety and threatens thousands of livelihoods across the country.”
