Thoughts from a garage: Hayley Pells of Avia Autos on what she has learned

Date: Tuesday 20 October 2020

On reflection, spring felt like it had an expectation of temporary measures in order to bypass a catastrophic event. Autumn tells us that many of the changes are here to stay for some time, some of which have had a positive impact on our small workshop. I purchased a number of vehicle sanitation kits recently and was very happy to donate a number of them to a local nursery who are bringing their forestry schools online shortly and will be utilising the kits for their mini bus.

I feel we are leaner, stronger and communicate more. The “second tour” feeling of additional lockdown measures have been absorbed into the workshop process and a “circuit breaker” lockdown in Wales is looking familiar to the first. As key workers, workshops like mine are encouraged to remain open, but I imagine I am not alone in my concern on what vehicles will require repairs if not many people are using them.

In these uncertain times I have felt reassured by the organisations that support us and have renewed our memberships for

• Federation of Small Business
• Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation
• Independent Garage Association
• Motor Ombudsman

Each organisation brings valuable information to our small business by collating information and contextualising to the sector, this is an important resource and I see value in their continued representation of interests that are important to me.

The colder weather may place greater reliance on the motor vehicle, and I will shortly begin our communication with motorists for their winter safety checks. After the MOT extension, I believe that this will be critical to the safety of our road users and look forward to working in concert with those who represent all independent workshops in making our contribution to road safety a well-orchestrated campaign, one that will protect lives and livelihoods.
