Spinning for The Stroke Association

Date: Thursday 14 October 2021

Nick Racklyeft of Corteco is doing a sponsored bike spinning event throughout October to help raise funds for the Stroke Association. His aim is to do 250 miles on his spin bike which, considering his average is 8 miles per session, seems a daunting prospect!

Nick's father suffered a bad stroke 9 weeks ago and he remains in hospital to date. However, he has just started his rehabilitation in a specialist stroke unit, and so the family is hoping for as much physical recovery as possible in the coming weeks.

Strokes account for one quarter of the total deaths in the UK, yet there is a significant shortage of dedicated care units and specialists in this country. A report published by the British Association of Stroke Physicians (BASP) in 2019 claimed that there is a 'worrying' shortfall of stroke specialists, and the number needs to increase by an additional 226 full-time stroke consultants (an increase of 33%) to meet the current needs of patients in the UK.

Nick's aim, therefore, is to raise as much as possible to help provide specialist equipment, and research, to aid sufferers in rebuilding their lives following a stroke.
