RokLUME 280N SMART: Intelligent work lamp for mining, construction and forestry machines

Date: Thursday 17 December 2020

In order to increase operator safety, health and productivity in mining, construction work or forestry, HELLA, the lighting and electronics specialist, is launching the new RokLUME 280N SMART work lamp, which can adjust its light individually to different weather or driving conditions.

Experience shows that visibility in dusty, snowy or foggy conditions can be significantly improved by using green or amber light. So, with the RokLUME 280N SMART, operators can change the colour accordingly. In addition, the intelligent work lamp is equipped with a dimming function to avoid blinding both the operator and those in the vicinity. The colour temperature can also be continuously adjusted from warm white to cold white, which can increase visibility in many different situations.

For ease of conversion, the RokLUME 280N SMART has the same dimensions as the standard RokLUME 280N work lamp and also has a 2-pole Deutsch DT plug. The new work lamp is available in six different light distribution variants: Diffuse Flood, Close Range, Long Range, Pencil Beam, Tunnel Flood (perfect for underground mining) or ZEROGLARE illumination and all are equipped with SMART functions for individual light adjustment. The work lamp is also equipped with a lifetime function, a system that gives advance warning before the headlamp's service life expires, thus preventing unplanned downtime. Also integrated is an anti-theft protection and a memory function for saving individual illumination settings.

The HELLA Gateway control unit, which is included and is required for communication with the work lamps, uses power line communication (PLC) and means that signals to the work lamp can be sent through the existing wiring harness. This allows manufacturers to offer a lighting upgrade without having to change the vehicle architecture, provide separate wiring harnesses or circuits to control the work lamps. This greatly simplifies the upgrade process and means that mine operators and end-users can also convert their vehicles easily.

If the RokLUME 280N SMART is retrofitted, it is controlled via a HELLA control panel, which is also included in the set. The original equipment version is supplied with a CAN bus interface and so be controlled via the customer's Human Machine Interface (HMI).
