Potential impact on the aftermarket of a revision to the composition of the VIN number

At a recent meeting of the Techncial Committee for Motor Vehicles, the European Commission announced their intention to revise the composition of the vehicle identification number (VIN) as they want to assign a "check digit" in the 9th position to avoid technical errors.
It will be necessary to assess the impact of this revision on the automotive aftermarket as the VIN number is used as the basis for parts identification.
