Local students in motorsport challenge

Date: Thursday 30 June 2022

Llangefni-based Coleg Menai and Anglesey Based Lucas Oil Products (UK) have agreed a joint-venture project designed to fine-tune many of the practical skills being learned by the next generation of vehicle mechanics. The move forms part of an initiative developed in association with the US Oil manufacturer’s educational arm, known as the Lucas Oil Academy (LOA).

As part of the initiative, two teams of Coleg Menai students, all of whom are enrolled on the Motorsport Engineering Level 2 programme, will learn how fuel and oil additive technology is used to enhance vehicle maintenance techniques and improve overall vehicle performance. At the end of their two-year programme, there will be a race-off between the cars (one built by each team), using a mix of kits and recycled components from donor vehicles.

Arron Peel, Coleg Menai’s deputy manager for engineering says:

“What an amazing opportunity for our students, who are among the first students in Wales to be schooled in oil and additive technology at the LOA. We are lucky to have students with the enthusiasm to take part as well as a dedicated team of training professionals at Coleg Menai who have worked hard to make a project like this possible. What an amazing experience this will be for our learners.”

As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of oils and additives, Lucas Oil is well placed to provide the students with technical support. It also has a technical team with lots of practical garage and motor sports experience to call on.

The LOA was conceived as a way of helping young student mechanics to build an early understanding about oil and additive technology, along with the changing roles these products have in automotive engineering.

Commenting on the initiative, Dan Morgan, director of sales and operations, at Lucas Oil Products (UK) says:

“The LOA project is an extension of our ‘grass roots to top rank performance strategy’, which involves educational initiatives, sponsorship for local organisations as well as other community projects.”
