Government consultations

The government has recently initiated two consultation processes which may be of interest to IAAF members.

1. Consulting on ending the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and vans

This consultation concerns the ending of the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and vans by 2035 or earlier if a faster transition appears feasible and closes at 11:45pm on 29 May 2020.

The government is asking for views on:

• the phase out date
• the definition of what should be phased out
• barriers to achieving the above proposals
• the impact of these ambitions on different sectors of industry and society
• what measures are required by government and others to achieve the earlier phase out date

2. Introducing E10 Petrol

This consultation sets out proposals on how to introduce E10 petrol for vehicle use throughout in the UK and closes at 11:45pm on 19 April 2020.

Unleaded petrol currently contains up to 5% bioethanol, a grade known as E5, whereas E10 petrol contains up to 10% bioethanol and is not currently available.

This consultation is:

• proposing introducing E10 petrol as the 95 octane “Premium” grade
• proposing ensuring the ongoing availability of E5 petrol in the higher octane “Super” grade only
• proposing amending the mandatory labelling of E10 petrol
• launching a call for evidence on future transport biofuels policy

The government view is that introducing E10 petrol:

• will reduce CO2 emissions from petrol vehicles
• could help the UK meet emissions reductions targets.
