DVSA launches SAFE campaign

Date: Friday 05 March 2021

The DVSA has today launched its SAFE campaign. It has been a tough year and as a result of the MOT exemptions issued to keep people safe through the pandemic, the DVSA is aware that this has introduced peaks and troughs in MOT demand. The strapline to the campaign is ‘Whatever your essential journey, make it SAFE’, and it focuses on the basic checks motorists can do if they need to drive more often for essential journeys.

As part of this campaign, the DVSA is recommending motorists visit their garage for a service or health check if they are not sure about anything.

‘Whatever your essential journey, make it SAFE’
As schools reopen and motorists who need to drive are on the road more often, the DVSA is encouraging vehicle owners to check their vehicle before they set off and make sure they are SAFE by doing 4 basic checks:

  • Service or health check if needed
  • Air in tyres
  • Fill up screenwash
  • Examine lights and tyre tread.

The DVSA has created materials to be used to reach motorists and prompt them to book a service, health check or early MOT.

They have put together a toolkit (see attachments below) with draft messages for social media, customer emails, and graphics.

The DVSA will be sending a DVSA Direct to the industry to promote the campaign toolkit on our Matters of Testing blog and will also be posting on social media and speaking to the press to get media coverage for the SAFE checks

Last autumn the DVSA ran a similar campaign called “Beat the Rush” which had some good results getting motorists into garages early and planning their MOT. They are hopeful that this campaign will have similar success and help to get motorists thinking about their vehicle safety and get a few through more through garage doors as we ease out of lockdown and back onto the roads.
