“Data key to e-commerce success”

Date: Friday 28 May 2021

The latest IAAF industry briefing has taken place with an excellent insight from E-Motive and eBay into how to maximise opportunities on the platform.

With more than 40 delegates in virtual attendance, Andrew Rowson, founder and CEO of E-Motive, went through the online marketplace customer journey and highlighted the importance of data and brand protection.

He also acknowledged the opportunity of eBay with its high audience and relatively low start-up costs. This was echoed by Ian Faulkner eBay UK Category Manager Vehicle Parts and Accessories / Business & Industrial who highlighted the 29million active buyers on the platform.

Faulkner said eBay was the largest online Parts & Accessories platform in the UK and that the category was growing by 29 percent year on year.

“A car part on eBay sells every second,” he said, “and 50 percent of sold items have free delivery within three days.”

Faulkner then listed the opportunities available to the aftermarket to embrace the platform and the technology supporting the end user experience.

Following an excellent Q&A session, Mike Smallbone, IAAF Head of Membership Development provided an update on Block Exemption Regulation (BER) Renewal and also the real and present threat to the sector around cybersecurity.

IAAF has also set-up a new working group AFCAR (Alliance for the Freedom of Car Repair), with Smallbone saying the initial focus was on educating the UK government on current BER regulations.

Moving on to cybersecurity, the threat to the industry was outlined with a determination from the federation to bring the market up to speed on the far reaching consequences.

Mike Smallbone said:

“Once again the attendance at the industry briefings was excellent and it is a clear indication to IAAF to continue to communicate across all levels of the supply chain the issues and technological developments affecting the future of our sector.”
