Thousands raised as Lucas and SMPE make ice hockey history

SMPE’s Lucas engine management brand and Ice Hockey UK have successfully raised £7,800 for UK charities, having teamed up to offer fans the chance to own a piece of British Ice Hockey history.

As the leading sponsor of Ice Hockey UK, Lucas partnered with UK All-Stars Ice Hockey to offer fans the chance to bid on limited-edition Lucas green warm-up jerseys from Great Britain’s World Championship warm-up matches in 2019. It was the first time Team GB had ever worn the Lucas green shirts for on-ice warm-ups. 
Running from 6 to 10 November, fans bid on every player’s shirt with proceeds going to UK All-Stars, the annual festival of ice hockey that sees a group of ice hockey fans travel from far and wide, raising funds for charities such as Mind, Breast Cancer Now, British Heart Foundation, Dreams Come True, Help for Heroes, Prostate Cancer UK and Ty Hafan children’s hospice. The charity has raised in excess of £130,000 since its inception.

A total of £3894 was raised in the jersey auction and this figure was matched by SMPE bringing the total amount donated to £7,800. Each jersey had a starting price of £50 and the auction was widely promoted on Lucas Automotive’s twitter page, @LucasEurope.

Ross Toomey, SMPE’s managing director, said: “We’re delighted to have championed the auction and raised thousands of pounds for charity. Through our association with Ice Hockey UK, we’ve taken the Lucas brand to new territories and customers, raising the profile of the brand in conjunction with our own engineering excellence.” 

The Lucas brand is a proud sponsor of UK Ice Hockey and Lucas branding appeared on the GB World Championship Jersey and all replica jerseys, in addition to tapping into the sport’s increasingly popular marketing platforms such as social media and game merchandise.

Andy French, Ice Hockey UK general secretary, said: “What an amazing response from UK ice hockey supporters bidding on this unique GB warm-up jerseys. When they were designed we thought they would be something special with the striking Lucas green. I would just like to underline the fantastic support from Lucas with this auction, backed up by the amazing donation from them to take the fundraising to a brilliant total.”

Ice hockey is now the most watched indoor sport in Britain, with higher visitor attendance at live games and a surge in the number of social media followers.

The Lucas engine management brand is now distributed to customers throughout the UK and Europe by SMPE, with many customers benefiting from the company’s considerable investment in range re-profiling, packaging and cataloguing. A further 1500 parts have been added to the Lucas engine management programme, resulting in a 65 percent increase in vehicle parc coverage.
