NGK sponsors Wolverhampton Wolves Speedway team

Date: 09-Apr-2019

Ignition specialist NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd is once again backing the Parrys International Wolverhampton Wolves Speedway team’s bid to win the British Premiership League.

The company is supporting the team for a second successive season as well as once again sponsoring the popular Olympique individual meeting at Wolverhampton on Monday, October 21.

NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd – a leading supplier of original equipment (OE) spark plugs, glow plugs and NTK sensors – is a long-standing supporter of Speedway, sponsoring a number of leading riders including four-time World champion Greg Hancock, current and triple World champion Tai Woffinden and former winner Jason Doyle, meaning the past six years’ World champions are all now backed by NGK.

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring Wolves for the 2019 season. Speedway is a family sport that we have supported for many years and it is fantastic to be associated with the team again.
“Our logo will be featured on all the riders’ leathers as well as on the safety fence and we have supplied all the team with pit bike mats and other merchandise. We will also be featured in the programmes on home race days and look forward to welcoming customers as our guests throughout the season.”

Wolves promoter Chris Van Straaten said: “It is no secret that clubs like ours rely on the support of sponsors such as NGK and it is great that they are supporting us again this season as well as our Olympique meeting. A company like NGK brings a high level of professionalism to the sport and everything steps up a gear when they are involved.”

Team captain Rory Schlein added: “It is great to once again be the skipper this season. I love the track and always enjoy riding here. The team looks good on paper, really solid and our aim is to make the play-offs this season when anything can happen.

“I have never used anything other than NGK spark plugs; my race team wouldn’t let me use anything else! To have such a company as NGK associated with us is fantastic; they are such a renowned brand like Coca-Cola.”

Rory has high-hopes for 20-year-old American team-mate Luke Becker who is riding for the first time in Britain.

Luke, who is being supported by fellow countryman Greg Hancock, said: “I raced for the first time in Europe last season when I competed in Sweden and Poland, but it is my first time in Britain and I’m really looking forward to it. Everyone has made me feel really welcome at Wolverhampton and I can’t wait to get started.”

Wolves were dealt a pre-season blow when Sweden’s Jacob Thorsell suffered a hand injury in a Moto-Cross accident, but the team has moved quickly to replace him with seven-time British champion Scott Nicholls.

Scott said: “I’m really pleased to be able to help the team out. I’ve been close to riding for Wolverhampton on a couple of occasions over the past 20 years so to get this chance out of the blue is great. Wolverhampton has always been a really professionally run club and I’ve always enjoyed riding here. I am here until June and then we will have to see what happens when Jacob returns.”

Wolves’ first home match is in the Premiership Supporters Cup against Peterborough on Monday, April 8.
