NGK launches new NTK sensors range in the UK

Date: 20-May-2019

World-leading ignition and sensor manufacturer NGK has introduced a new range of premium NTK camshaft and crankshaft sensors (also known as engine speed & position sensors) to the UK.

The new sensors – comprising more than 200 UK-specific part numbers with excellent UK vehicle parc coverage – opens up further original equipment (OE) replacement opportunities for aftermarket customers.

Their introduction follows NGK’s recent launch of 20 new wide band Lambda sensors – commonly referred to as ‘5-wire’ Lambda sensors – which supplemented its existing range of 64 NTK OE 5-wire sensors and confirms the NTK vehicle electronics brand as the complete, one-stop shop for replacement sensors.

Cam and crankshaft sensors are a vital part of the engine management system and provide information about engine speed and the exact position of several engine parts, camshaft/valves and crankshaft/pistons. Supplying this information to the engine control unit (ECU) enables the fuel injection and ignition systems to function efficiently.

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “As a company we never stand still and are constantly looking ahead and working to expand our product offering to our customers.

“NGK has always been renowned as a supplier of original equipment spark plugs, glow plugs and NTK Lambda sensors to the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers and the indpendendent automotive aftermarket and in recent years has also become increasingly well known for its expanding NTK sensors‘ range.

“NTK has more than 40 years’ experience in the sensor business and this new comprehensive range of premium camshaft and crankshaft sensors confirms our position as the UK’s leading ignition and sensor supplier and is sure to prove popular with our distributors and their garage customers.“

NGK will be displaying the new NTK camshaft and crankshaft sensors, ‘5-wire’ Lambda sensors and Mass Air Flow (MAF) and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensors alongside its OE spark plugs and glow plugs, plus ignition coils, on Stand N170 at Automechanika at Birmingham’s NEC on June 4-6.

Timing is critical to optimise the efficiency of an engine and the new sensors are key to ensuring the correct functioning of fuel injection and ignition systems.

Connected to the pistons and the gearbox, the crankshaft converts the linear, vertical movements of the pistons into rotary motion that powers the engine and makes the vehicle move. The crankshaft sensor keeps track of this rotational speed.

The purpose of the camshaft is to open and close the valves. It is connected to, and driven by, the crankshaft and rotates at half of the crankshaft’s speed. The camshaft sensor continually measures the position of the camshaft to ensure appropriate synchronisation.

Both these sensor signals are used by the ECU to determine which cylinder is currently in its power stroke. From this the ECU determines precisely when to inject fuel and when to apply voltage to the ignition coil for perfectly timed spark plug operation and smooth engine control. The importance of sensors to vehicle operation therefore makes selecting a quality supplier even more important.

NGK has also published new technical ‘Knowhow’ brochures for customers which further outline the vital role of camshaft and crankshaft sensors.
