NGK backs teenage Speedway star

Date: 28-Mar-2019

NGK is backing 13-year-old Wilbur Hancock for the 2019 Speedway season.

The ignition specialist has had a long-standing relationship with his father legendary four-time World champion Greg and is sponsoring his eldest son as he takes to the track in Sweden where the family lives during the European racing season.

Wilbur, who first took to the track aged just seven, said: “Next season, I will be riding for Rospiggarna in the Swedish league, the 2019 Swedish Championships and most likely some races in Germany, and the FIM 250 World Championships.”

NGK started supporting Wilbur in 2017, when he was aged just 12.

Speaking at the time, he said: “I couldn’t believe it when Dad said NGK were keen to sponsor me. I thought ‘is this really happening?’ I love everything about Speedway, going sideways, the speed and the sound. It’s great.”

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “We are delighted to announce that we are once again sponsoring Wilbur in 2019. We have had a long and successful relationship with Greg over many years and it is great that we can now support Wilbur in the early stages of his Speedway career.”

Speedway supporter NGK recently announced it is sponsoring a trio of World champions who will all be using the company’s spark plugs for the 2019 Grand Prix season.

The ignition specialist has signed-up Californian Greg as well as triple and current World champion Tai Woffinden and former winner Jason Doyle, meaning the past six years’ World champions are all now backed by NGK. The company is also supporting fellow stars Emil Sayfutdinov and Matej Zagar.
