Are you ready for the GDPR?

Date: 05-Sep-2017

If you don't actually know what GDPR stands for, then you are almost certainly not ready for this key change of law which is coming your way.

The GDPR is the General Data Protection Regulation, an EU piece of legislation, which will essentially enhance your responsibilities with regard to data protection. Regardless of Brexit, this new law will come into effect in the UK in May 2018 and now would not be too soon to start thinking about how it will affect you and your business.

Every business already has data protection responsibilities and this is an excellent opportunity to review your current procedures so as to ensure you meet these current rules.  For example, does your company have the required privacy notice on your website which tells your website visitors who you are, what information you collect from their visit and how you use it? If not, one is required and will definitely need to be in place when the GDPR comes in, since even details such as the visitor’s IP address will be confirmed as ‘personal data’.

More information can be obtained from the Information Commissioner's website, perhaps starting with their 12 point checklist: Preparing for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 12 steps to take now.
